If you’re not sure what the difference is between juices and smoothies, then this post will clear up the confusion once and for all!
JUICES
- Juices are smooth, liquid only drinks with no pulp/fibre
- They are extracted from fruits, vegetables, herbs and greens
- Juice pours through a sieve with no residue left behind
- Juices are made in a JUICER – NOT a blender
- Juicers separate the juice of something (e.g. a carrot, orange, apple, beetroot) from the fibre within that ingredient
- Shop-bought juices are usually pasteurised and of inferior quality
- The best juices will be the ones you make yourself or that are made fresh for you in a store/juice bar
- Juices digest easier and more quickly than smoothies as they contain no fibre
- Juices may comprise one ingredient only (e.g. apple juice) or may be combined with other juices (e.g. apple and carrot juice, or apple, carrot and celery juice.)
SMOOTHIES
- Smoothies are liquid + fibre blended together to create a thick and filling drink
- The liquid part may be water, milk (any kind), yoghurt (any kind) or juice
- The fibre part comes from a whole peeled fruit such as banana, pineapple, mango, which is blended up with the liquid to create the smoothie
- Smoothies are made in a blender
- Smoothies often comprise of multiple ingredients and may have superfoods or other ingredients added to the blend such as raw cacao powder, green powders, almond butter, oats, nuts, chia seeds, etc.
- Shop-bought smoothies are usually pasteurised and of inferior quality
- The best smoothies will be the ones you make yourself or that are made fresh for you in a store/juice/smoothie bar
- Smoothies can act as a meal replacement because of their ability to fill you up and sustain you for a few hours
